Hoje trago para vocês My ID Is Gangnam Beauty um dorama que tem muito a nos ensinar, baseado em um maravilhoso webtoon de Gi Maeng Gi, publicado de 2016 a 2017 pela Naver. Só para entenderem o contexto do nome, Gangnam é um distrito de Seul onde vivem pessoas da alta sociedade, um bairro de alto padrão onde se concentra o maior número de clínicas de cirurgia plástica e Gangnam Beauty significa – beleza de Gangnam. Parece um elogio logo de cara mas o sentido é pejorativo, usado para chamar e depreciar pessoas que fazem muitas cirurgias plásticas. O dorama fala sobre padrões de beleza, amor-próprio e superação. Padrões de beleza existem e mudam de acordo com o país, tempo e a cultura. Para quem acompanha a onda Hallyu sabe que muitos sul-coreanos se importam muito com a aparência, peso e etc., e que cirurgias plásticas são quase que algo natural, principalmente a double eyelid surgery, a cirurgia que muda de pálpebras únicas para pálpebras duplas. Ela é tão comum que chega a não ser considerado cirurgia plástica para muitos. Cremes para clarear a pele e dietas insanas também fazem parte do pacote, tudo em prol da beleza. Kang Mi-rae Im Soo-hyang é uma jovem meiga, inteligente e amorosa porém retraída pelo fato de ter sofrido bullying durante a infância e período escolar por conta da sua aparência “fora dos padrões.” Antes de entrar na faculdade Mi-rae com o apoio da sua mãe faz plastica em todo seu rosto, ao ponto de ficar irreconhecível, com o intuito de começar uma vida nova. Com um histórico sofrido com abusos psicológicos Mi-rae chega a universidade ainda machucada emocionalmente e receosa, mas com esperança de que dias melhores virão. Ao entrar na universidade Mi-rae reconhece Do Kyung-seok o fofíssimo Cha Eun-woo do grupo ASTRO um garoto que estudou na mesma escola que ela, reservado porem o mais bonito e inteligente da escola, sabe aquele menino perfeito e popular?? E ele, por ser o filho de um politico e ser obrigado a viver de aparências ao ponto de se sentir sufocado, tem aversão a status e beleza, e ao contrário de Mi-rae, enxerga apenas o interior e não se importa com o exterior das pessoas. Mesmo Mi-rae evitando-o ao máximo, ele acaba reconhecendo-a e eles se tornam amigos. Mi-rae se vê apaixonada por ele mas não se sente segura o suficiente, por ver as pessoas da faculdade constantemente compararem sua beleza com a de Hyeon Soo Ah Jo Woo Ri a garota mais linda da faculdade. Soo Ah é carente de afeto, e usa sua beleza a seu favor, sempre manipulando os outros, fazendo com que a atenção sempre se volte para a ela. Ao perceber o interesse de Do Kyung-seok por Mi-rae, espalha à todos ao seu redor sobre o passado de Mi-rae e sua plástica. Então Mi-rae se vê novamente presa a opinião das pessoas que, ao descobrirem que ela fez plástica, a apelidam de Gangnam beauty. Não é uma simples história sobre beleza, é muito mais profundo e nos faz refletir. Não é sobre julgar mas sim sobre ser julgado e isso nos traz empatia. Como seres humanos temos a necessidade de nos sentir aceitos, aceitos pela sociedade, por um grupo de amigos, pelos pais e o dorama nos traz tudo. Claro que eu teria muito mais pra contar sobre o dorama, mas acho que vai ser bem mais interessante se assistirem. Nunca sofri bullying mas agora adulta fiz cirurgia refrativa para poder parar de usar óculos. Por já terem me chamado de quatro olhos, ou de choquito branco por ter muita espinha na adolescência, sempre me achei feia, e essas marcas ficam e demoram para ser curadas. Hoje em dia estou ok com minha aparência e quanto aos óculos, até tenho vontade de usar pois os acho estilosos e tem um mais lindo que o outro. Não me acho linda e maravilhosa hahaha mas me sinto bem como sou, ninguém é perfeito e aprendi a me aceitar como sou, não totalmente rsrsrs… mas to tentando. O importante acima de tudo é vc estar bem consigo mesma, se amar e se dar valor. As pessoas que te amam vão sempre te amar pelo que você é e não pela sua aparência. Meeting those beauty standards has become a source of stress for women worldwide, but in South Korea -as this drama suggests- not being part of the "ideal beauty" results in a harsher treatment from society. This drama also emphasizes that the expectation to look a certain way affect everyone in different ways - with no one -regardless of whether they are considered naturally beautiful or not- being spared. In that respect, Mi-Rae our female lead isn't the shallow person the summary might imply. It takes just the first episode to understand how she became a victim of society's expectations. She didn't undergo surgery to become beautiful, she just wanted people to accept her as a "person," which is incredibly heartbreaking. The issue that arises afterward, one which she hadn't anticipated, was that people would still judge, reject and critique her. And that's where the story takes off. We not only follow Mi Rae as she gains confidence, but also other interesting characters who'd been suffering because or for their worth noting, however, that the pacing of this show is slow compared to other rom-com dramas. I'd say it's a stretch to tag it with comedy, since the comedic moments, despite how successfully they are implemented, are few and far between. That's not to say the show is weighted down by an overload of melodrama, because it's not. Instead, this show can be described as a sliced of life focused on self-reflection which, if you're open to it, will get you emotionally invested in the characters. Be forewarned, many of the male characters in this show and some of the female ones will definitely rile you up on more than one occasion. If I have one critique apart from the wardrobe, it would be the disbalance in the portrayal of the male characters. Except for a few gems, all the male characters were written like jerks and that can be off-putting. Some balanced between jerks and good guys could've helped the show feel less toxic. MAIN CHARACTERS Interesting & lovable-Kang Mi Rae female lead played by Im Soo Hyang She's a character who's suffered all her childhood because her looks didn't meet her peer's standards. She grew up as an introvert, keeping away from people, looking at other people's lives from afar and wishing she was allowed to have fun. Her frustration drove her to seek solace under the knife and, though she now had an acceptable face in society's eyes, her insides were still bruised and broken. Mi Rae is a complex and balanced character. If push comes to shove she'll fight, but mostly she tries to fly under the radar. She's smart and almost a natural when it comes to creating perfumes, but she struggles with an inferiority complex and doesn't like standing in the limelight. Though the actress looks quite old for the role, it is worth noting that the character was conceived by the webtoon artist as having an "older girl" look, so it stays true to the original intent. Do Kyung Suk male lead played by Cha Eun Woo He exists on the opposite side of the spectrum from Kang Mi Rae but also grows up feeling lonely. He's a handsome, smart, strong, kind and very straightforward guy whose isolation came as a result of presenting a front of "perfection" and "hating" anything to do with beauty for reasons later explained. As a result, he's socially awkward, brutally honest and a harsh judge. Though, to his credit, he's a character whose pride doesn't get in the way of realizing when he's made a mistake and make amends. Though some viewers didn't like his acting, personally I found his stoic way of delivering lines grew on me more and more as the show Woo Young second male lead played by Kwank Dong Yeon He's such a good character that he ends up giving Kyung Suk a run for his money. He's kind, honest, selfless and very mature. Though his character is a bit imbalanced as in he has more strengths than flaws, he's still a lovable man who, despite his good points, doesn't come off as being "too perfect". He's a character who helps those around him without expecting anything in return, even when he's financially struggling. Overall, his charming personality earned him fans within and outside the show. ANTAGONIST Complex and pitiful-Hyeon Soo Ah second female lead played by Jo Woo Ri She's someone stuck between Mi Rae and Kyung Suk in the spectrum of society's judgment. Though she's considered a natural beauty, she's not a stranger to suffering. Her struggles come from forcing herself to live in service of what other people expect of her. She's a character who's not only dishonest with other people, but with herself as well. Though she earned quite a bit of hate, I personally found her character very pitiful. The drama ended up brushing over her backstory, so if you're curious you can always check out the webtoon to get a better understanding of her OF ROMANCE Slow paced, healthy & nurturing -I mentioned before that the show is slow-paced and this is true for the romance as well. However, that pacing allows the progression of classmates to friends to lovers to feel very natural and endearing. There's a lot of cute scenes between the leads without making it cheesy, which is a plus for me. Some highlights of the romance-Their relationship is always healthy. -Both characters are new at romance, so they take their time to find their ground and, though they stumble, they do it together. -Both learn from each other, creating a very balanced relationship. -They learn to communicate what they want and need so the other person can understand, making their relationship not only refreshingly endearing but also nurturing. OVERALL Highly Recommended and the webtoon as well-This is an interesting slice of life that follows a group of characters trying to find their place in the world and build the courage to live by their standards, rather than society's judgment. Though it's slow-paced, the plot is interesting and the mood is often lightened up by warm moments of affection between the leads, their families and their in mind, I saw this as it was coming out. So binge watching it might give you a different experience because the plot moves slowly and the acting can sometimes come off looking/sounding very wooden. However, this is doubtlessly a memorable show that'll give you food for thought. If you're able and willing, I'd also encourage you to read the webtoon. There's a lot of insight to be gained that will help you get a better viewing experience. There are scenes, especially at the beginning of the drama, that'll make more sense if you know the context the webtoon provides. Mi-rae começa a entender que os problemas da vida estão além da aparência, mesmo ficando magra e com um rosto lindo, ela continua tendo vários problemas na sua vida. E uma das questões que mais acontece não só com ela é o machismo e assédios constantes que as personagens femininas sofrem nesta obra, não que a série quer pesar o enredo, mas só mostrar a realidade da sociedade. O kdrama é ambientado na universidade, e o enredo é todo voltado para os personagens jovens que acabaram de passar no vestibular. Então vamos conhecendo a trajetória de cada um, como eles chegaram lá e porque escolheram aquele curso. O prota de My ID is Gangnam Beauty Nossa prota se depara com um antigo colega do ensino fundamental que agora faz o mesmo curso que ela, a partir disso o enredo começa a andar isso já no primeiro ep. Kyung-seok tem um papel fundamental para apoiar -lá durante o desenvolvimento da personagem e também eles estram em um romance super lindo e fofo de assistir. Mi-rae ficou bonita mas ainda é muito imatura, como ela nunca teve a oportunidade de viver uma vida normal, ela acaba não tendo muitas experiencias de vida, chegando a ser super inocente em algumas situações. Pegando o gancho sobre a inocência da personagem, podemos falar um pouco sobre os antagonistas, já adianto que você vai passar muita raiva. A personagem da Soo Ah me tirou do sério de tanto ranço, mas isso só mostra a bos atriz que ela é; já o personagem do Woo Young ta no meu coração e gostei muito dele no dorama além de ser gato. Os personagens secundários servem mais para apoio aos protagonistas e também para atrapalhar alguns personagens masculinos, mas tudo isso com o intuito de ajudar no desenvolvimento da história e reforçando o destaque dos protagonistas e antagonistas. Gostei muito do papel das mulheres, trazendo questões atuais que antes não era muito presente nos doramas, além do carisma delas. A rivalidade feminina é um tema presente na narrativa, mulheres que são falsas umas com as outras, constante inveja ainda mais se a garota é muito bonita. Todas tentam encontrar seu amor mas acham que a qualquer momento outras mulheres vão roubar ele de você. E o que é mais triste é que o tema não é usado para empoderamento das mulheres e sim como algo para criar um triangulo amoroso que mulheres correm atrás do bonitão do drama, a rivalidade feminina infelizmente é uma realidade em várias sociedades, principalmente em lugares onde o machismo é muito enraizado como na Coreia do Sul. Trilha Sonora de My ID is Gangnam Beauty A trilha gostei bastante também, as musicas trazem muita emoção para o enredo e alguns momentos específicos da história, como por exemplo nas cenas românticas ou de alguma treta, briga alias rola muita briga nesse dorama. Para finalizar, My Id Gangnam Beauty é um drama muito bonito, fala do assunto da beleza, cirurgia plástica com muita profundidade. Não é porque uma pessoa que sofreu pela aparência a vida toda por ser feia e que agora que ta bonita vai ficar tudo bem. A protagonista continua insegura sobre sua aparência, não sabe lidar bem com novos problemas que acabam surgindo, fora que não adianta deixar nosso externo bonito e não praticar nosso auto cuidado. Recomendo o drama, principalmente se você assistiu True Beauty e gostou.
